AO Smith Water Heater Reviews From Real Customers

Many of the customer reviews available speak more to the services of the plumbing contractors or plumbing wholesaler the unit was bought from rather than the actual product itself.

The fact that these reviews are all very positive however speaks to the fact that A.O. Smith will only sell these products through reputable resellers with the same commitment to quality and service as they do.

Ease of purchase, excellent shipping options and problem free installations are common themes of the reviews.

There are a few reviews that mention problems with the units delivered but it is interesting to note that all of those problems were resolved speedily without any problems and to the customer’s satisfaction.

Another noteworthy point is that there seems to be a fairly big price difference between various suppliers. It will therefore be well worth your while to compare prices and special deals between suppliers.

Customers report that the A.O. Smith 75 gallon water heater is suitable for use in apartment buildings, as well as homes with 3 1/2 baths, some of which include a jetted tub, and 5 or 6 people living there.

The majority of customers buy this water heater as a replacement for a previous A.O. Smith water heater that lasted anything between 12 and 20 years.

Another common trend in these AO Smith water heater reviews is that these water heaters heat the water much faster and to a higher temperature than their predecessors do. Customers report that they quickly have to set the heaters to the ‘A’ setting – the lowest temperature and therefore also the most economical.

A number of reviews mention that the inlet water connection uses a ‘nonstandard’ 1” fitting, so a typical 0.75” adapter is required. One customer’s recommendation is to use dielectric unions during installation to prevent corrosion issues at outlet and inlet stubs.

FAQ

What is the maximum altitude at which the (PCG75) A.O. Smith 75 gallon water heater can be installed?

This water heater is approved for use at 7,700 ft. above sea level.

Does this heater use 110 V or 220 V?

This heater uses natural gas as an energy source and not electricity.  As it has an atmospheric (chimney) vent, it also does not require electricity for venting.

What type of vent does this heater use?

This heater uses a standard chimney atmospheric vent, i.e. not a power vent.

What is the energy factor rating and is it eligible for energy tax rebates?

As this unit’s is BTU input is greater than 75,000 it is not Energy Star-rated and therefore does not qualify for energy tax rebates.

What is the unit’s recovery time?

The recovery time is 81 gallons per hour at a raise of 90°F.

Customer Reviews

One does not often find negative reviews for A.O. Smith water heaters. There was however one for this model where the customer complains about the unit being very noisy and requiring a few repairs during its 5 years of life. The customer also states that this model was used in their community and many had been replaced.

Other reviews mention replacing A.O. Smith water heater after between 6 and 37 years.

Installation is simple and tends to go smoothly. There are some comments about the inlet water connection being 1” rather than the standard ¾” found in most houses. This is however easily solved by using adaptors.

The biggest challenges with installation is the physical size and weight of the unit that make it tricky to maneuver into position for installation. Need help installing a water heater? Click Here

Customers also report that this heater supplies enough hot water for high demand applications. Such as filling a 120 gallon tub, producing enough hot water for a Jacuzzi tub, washing machine, and shower to be used at the same time. Or filling a jetted tub, running the dish washer and washing machine at the same time.

FAQ

Can the unit be used with LP gas?

No, this unit uses natural gas. There are however other models designed specifically for LP gas. See below.

  • Highest recoveries and first hour ratings
  • Dynaclean diffuser dip tube helps reduce lime and sediment buildup, maximizes hot water output; made from long lasting PEX cross-linked polymer
  • Patented eco-friendly design reduces Knox emissions by up to 33% and complies with less than 40 ng/j requirements for NOx emissions
  • CoreGard anode rode has a stainless steel core, protects tank against corrosion
  • Push-button Piezo igniter makes lighting pilot fast and easy with one-hand push-button spark ignition

What is C3 Technology? Is it the same as FVIR?

Some AO Smith products use “Corderite Combustion Containment,” also known as C3 Technology. It is a patented system that accomplishes the same results as any other FVIR system. A.O. Smith would claim that their system is better than other FVIR systems.

Both C3 Technology and other FVIR technology uses a flame arrestor component and a sealed combustion chamber. Which is a safety feature that prevents potential gas explosions.

FVIR refers to “Flammable Vapor Ignition Resistant”. It is designed to prevent flammable gases that are outside of the water heater from causing an explosion. This was mandated to be installed on all gas water heaters in 2003.

That’s because there had been explosions caused by homeowners having spilled gasoline near the water heater. The fumes from the gasoline were able to reach the water heater which caused the fumes to explode.

So, C3 Technology does the same thing as FVIR, but in a slightly different way and in a (possibly) better way.

What does BTU mean?

One BTU is how much heat is needed to increase the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. More BTUs equates to more heating power.

Is the FCG-75 rated for high altitude?

This water heater is rated for up to 7700 feet. If you use it at a higher altitude, it will not achieve the highest efficiency rating with thinner air, but will work fine.

What is FHR?

FHR stands for First Hour Rating. Water heaters with BTU ratings of more than 75,000 do not have an FHR or energy factors assigned.

What is the difference between the 6 year warranty for the FCG-75 and the 10 year warranty for the PCG-75?

One customer’s pessimistic answer to this question states that there is no difference between these units. That the extra expense of the PCG-75 is to cover the cost of the longer warranty. I have to disagree with that customer.

Longer warranties are given to water heaters that have thicker glass coatings that will make the tank last longer. Typically, longer warranties also include longer lasting anode rods, and brass parts instead of plastic parts.

AO Smith PCG-75 Residential Natural Gas Water Heater
  • Dynaclean diffuser dip tube-helps reduce lime and sediment buildup, maximizes hot water output
  • Green Choice gas burner-patented design reduces NOx emissions
  • Coregard magnesium anode
  • Push-button Piezo ignitor

Another answer however points out that the PCG-75 has a magnesium anode that will last longer than the FCG-75’s aluminum anode.

What is the efficiency rating for the FCG-75?

Due to the high BTU input rating, the FCG-75 does not have a thermal efficiency rating or energy factor.

The 75 gallon models are typically 80%.

At what temperatures are the A, B, and C temperature setting set?

  • A = 130°F
  • B = 140°F
  • C = 150°F

The ProMax water heaters use power vents and have been designed with greater energy factors (EF) to maximize efficiency.

    • Hi Mark,
Where is the water heater located? The most common problem is that the pilot light flame blows out. Is there a time when a breeze flows past the water heater?
Also, air flow will bring the pilot light/burner and thermocouple into contact with airborne chemicals, dust and dirt. These things can prevent them from operating properly. Cleaning or replacing them is the answer. However, prevention is the better solution. That said, I understand that changing the environment around the water heater could be difficult or impossible.
The piezo switch on the thermostat might not fire every time. Replace if needed.
In a rare case, the thermocouple could be slightly out of place. Meaning that it doesn’t touch the pilot light flame. Yes, this could be an intermittent problem under certain circumstances. If it was too far out of place the water heater would not start at all.
Gas Control. If it was defective the water heater probably won’t work at all. Although, again rarely, there could be something that just isn’t right, and isn’t even detectable. If you have tried everything else, you might try replacing it.
Sadly, this sounds a lot like fixing a 1958 car without any diagnostic tests. In other words, replacing one part after another until the problem is eventually fixed.
