State Condensing Tankless Water Heater 540P Series Review

(Last Updated On: )

Perfect for homes, motels, and small businesses of all types. Instant, endless, reliable hot water is what you get with a State condensing tankless water heater.

Up to 20 of these can be combined together to solve any hot water problem you have.

Tell Me More About The State Condensing Tankless Water Heater 540P

State condensing tankless water heaters are powered by gas, either natural gas or liquid propane, and have been designed to provide potable water on demand. This enables the appliances to provide a continuous and endless supply of hot water in light commercial and residential applications.

The State on-demand water heaters all have attractive designs, are small in size and are mounted hanging from a wall, which makes them suitable for installation anywhere inside the building. These models are suitable both for whole-house or point-of-use water heating.

Many built-in and advanced features enable highly efficient, reliable and long lasting operation during its lifetime.

These units have a 15 year limited warranty on the heat exchanger if they are used in residential applications, while a 5 year limited warranty on the heat exchanger is applicable for commercial applications. A 5 year warranty is also applicable to all parts.

State tankless appliances come in two types – non-condensing and condensing. Both types have models that uses either natural gas or liquid propane for heating, while they also come with outdoor or indoor installation options.

Making Sense Of Bosch Model Numbers

The model numbers signify whether it is an indoor (I) or outdoor (E) model and which type of gas it uses – N for natural gas and P for liquid propane.

Therefore:

  • NE or NEH means natural gas exterior (outdoors). The ‘H’ in the second model number simply means heater.
  • PE or PEH means liquid propane exterior.
  • NI or NIH means natural gas indoors.
  • PI or PIH means liquid propane indoors.

Outdoor (NE or PE) models are designed to be ventless, and are installed outside on an exterior wall or in a protective box, while indoor models (NI or PIH) are installed inside a building.

Indoor models move exhaust gases out and fresh air in via vent pipes. Some indoor models can be converted to use direct venting. Condensing venting is cheaper than non-condensing venting as ABS, PVC, and other cheap materials are used.

Comes With Integrated Recirculation Pump

The State 540P series tankless water heaters use integrated recirculation pumps to provide instant, on demand, hot water in commercial or residential applications that have dedicated recirculation lines. This should not be confused with the 540 series which does not have integrated circulation pumps, although separate circulation pumps can be added.

An easy-to-use user interface with multiple pump settings permits the pump to be controlled easily with customized pump operation to meet specific requirements while heater efficiency is maximized at the same time.

The indoor models boast an integrated pump and temperature controller, while outdoor models include a remote control as standard.

Features Of The State Condensing Tankless Water Heater

State Condensing Tankless Water Heater 540P Features AllWaterProducts.com

Dual Heat Exchanger Cuts The Fuel Bill

State 540P tankless water heaters contain two heat exchangers.

The primary is manufactured from HRS35 copper alloy that is resistant to heat and contains additive elements making it much stronger (tensile strength) and harder. That is, in comparison to the standard C1220 copper alloy often used in other heat exchangers. This alloy is 8 times stronger than normal copper, even at high temperatures. It also resists the damaging effects of corrosion which is the most common cause of leaks in heat exchangers.

The secondary heat exchanger is manufactured from 316L stainless steel that provides additional corrosion protection due to lower exhaust temperatures causing acidic condensation. The rest of the heat transfer happens in this exchanger.

Due to the extreme working conditions that the material is constantly subjected to, such as acidic condensation, chloride, and heat, 316L stainless steel is more suitable in condensing heat exchangers.

Integrated Recirculation Pump

The State 540P tankless water heater contains an integrated recirculation pump, unlike the 540 series which does not. This simplifies installation as there is no need to source and install the pump and its controls. Front panel controls enable the setting of recirculation pump operation to ensure there is always hot water at your faucet.

Safety Features

A State tankless water heater is very safe. The water heater will turn off automatically if an element does not work, or one of the requirements is not met. Safety features include an internal freeze protection system that switches on if the surrounding air’s temperature drops and there is a risk of freezing, and overheat cut off to prevent the element being exposed to high temperatures.

Diagnostic codes for troubleshooting are also available.

Increasing Water Flow

When two or more water heaters are grouped into a single system, the water flow can be increased.

This is achieved via the Easy-Link system that enables up to 4 units to be connected.

Also, up to 20 units can be grouped via the Multi-unit system for large residential or commercial applications.

Air-Fuel Ratio Sensor

State condensing tankless water heaters have the air-fuel ratio sensors that adjusts the speed of the fan motor and provides the correct air/fuel mixture for ideal gas combustion. This reduces the greenhouse gas emissions, and also maximizes efficiency while boosting performance.

Modulation Saves Money

Gas control valves are modulated to adjust gas flow rate, resulting in the water heater only using the amount of energy that is needed to reach the set temperature, thereby minimizing energy loss.

Condensing Type Water Heaters Are Energy Stars

These condensing water heaters are Energy Star rated. Which result in increased savings with an ultra-high energy factor ranging of between 0.93 and 0.95.

Condensing type water heaters use two heat exchangers with the secondary element manufactured from heavy-duty stainless steel. This makes it resistant to flue gases’ acidic condensation and corrosion.

As this type uses a secondary heat exchanger, the condensing tankless water heater’s weight is significantly more, with the maximum weight being 62.5 lbs.

Better Water Pathway Design For Long Life

The temperature of the finned coil and the heat exchanger drum stay above the dew point due to water flow having been redesigned and redirected. This makes it more difficult for condensation to build up.

Drum Thickness Creates Durability

Every heat exchanger undergoes heat stress due to thermal expansion at every ignition cycle. Water heaters can be damaged by the thousands of On/Off cycles typical in commercial applications. To ensure durability, State’s commercial products use heat exchangers with 25% thicker drums that produce less strain on the heat exchanger.

Fin Pitch Is Important?

Higher temperature levels can be maintained on the upper finned coils and durability improved by reducing blockage via the widening of the heat exchanger fins’ pitch. The chances of condensation creation at the coils is reduced by keeping them at an elevated temperature.

Summary

State tankless water heaters are about efficiency, technology, flexibility and savings.

They can be used in numerous applications due to the venting installation’s flexibility when used in recirculation systems. These include home heating systems, combined with storage tanks, as one unit or combined in multiple systems and for solar heating.

State tankless water heaters are ideal for demanding environments and can deliver a continuous supply of hot water for a home with 3 baths in northern climates and 4 baths in southern climates.
